24th Sunday after Pentecost 

On December 4th we celebrate The Entry into the Temple of the Most-holy Theotokos. When the Most-holy Virgin Mary reached the age of three, her holy parents Joachim and Anna took her from Nazareth to Jerusalem to dedicate her to the service of God according to their earlier promise. It was a three-day journey from Nazareth to Jerusalem but, traveling to do a God-pleasing work, this journey was not difficult for them. Many kinsmen of Joachim and Anna gathered in Jerusalem to take part in this event, at which the invisible angels of God were also present. Leading the procession into the Temple were virgins with lighted tapers in their hands, then the Most-holy Virgin, led on one side by her father and on the other side by her mother. The virgin was clad in vesture of royal magnificence and adornments as was befitting the ``King's daughter, the Bride of God'' (Psalm 45:13-15). Following them were many kinsmen and friends, all with lighted tapers. Fifteen steps led up to the Temple. Joachim and Anna lifted the Virgin onto the first step, then she ran quickly to the top herself, where she was met by the High Priest Zacharias, who was to be the father of St. John the Forerunner. Taking her by the hand, he led her not only into the Temple, but into the ``Holy of Holies,'' the holiest of holy places, into which no one but the high priest ever entered, and only once each year, at that. St. Theophylact of Ohrid says that Zacharias ``was outside himself and possessed by God'' when he led the Virgin into the holiest place in the Temple, beyond the second curtain-otherwise, his action could not be explained. Mary's parents then offered sacrifice to God according to the Law, received the priest's blessing and returned home. The Most-holy Virgin remained in the Temple and dwelt there for nine full years. While her parents were alive, they visited her often, especially Righteous Anna. When God called her parents from this world, the Most-holy Virgin was left an orphan and did not wish to leave the Temple until death or to enter into marriage. As that would have been against the Law and custom of Israel, she was given to St. Joseph, her kinsman in Nazareth, after reaching the age of twelve. Under the acceptable role of one betrothed, she could live in virginity and thus fulfill her desire and formally satisfy the Law, for it was then unknown in Israel for maidens to vow virginity to the end of their lives. The Most-holy Virgin Mary was the first of such life-vowed virgins, of the thousands and thousands of virgin men and women who would follow her in the Church of Christ.

THE READING FROM THE EPISTLE OF THE HOLY APOSTLE PAUL TO THE EPHESIANS (2: 14-22)

Brethren, Christ Himself is our peace, who has made both [Jew and Gentile] one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation, having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace, and that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity.
And He came and preached peace to you who were afar off and to those who were near. For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father. Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone, in whom the whole building, being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.

THE GOSPEL READING FROM SAINT LUKE (8: 41-56)

At that time, a man named Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue, fell down at Jesus’ feet and begged Him to come to his house, for he had an only daughter about twelve years of age, and she was dying. But as He went, the multitudes thronged Him. Now a woman, having a flow of blood for twelve years, who had spent all her livelihood on physicians and could not be healed by any, came from behind and touched the border of His garment. And immediately her flow of blood stopped. And Jesus said, “Who touched Me?” When all denied it, Peter and those with him said, “Master, the multitudes throng and press You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’” But Jesus said, “Somebody touched Me, for I perceived power going out from Me.” Now when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling; and falling down before Him, she declared to Him in the presence of all the people the reason she had touched Him and how she was healed immediately. And He said to her, “Daughter, be of good cheer; your faith has made you well. Go in peace.” While He was still speaking, someone came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house, saying to Him, “Your daughter is dead. Do not trouble the Teacher.” But when Jesus heard it, He answered him, saying, “Do not be afraid; only believe, and she will be made well.” When He came into the house, He permitted no one to go in except Peter, James and John and the father and mother of the girl. Now all wept and mourned for her, but He said, “Do not weep, she is not dead, but sleeping.” And they ridiculed Him, knowing that she was dead. But He put them all outside, took her by the hand and called, saying, “Little girl, arise.” Then her spirit returned, and she arose immediately. And He commanded that she be given something to eat. And her parents were astonished, but He charged them to tell no one what had happened.

Браћо, Да бејасте у оно време без Христа, одвојени од друштва Израиљевог, и без дела у заветима обећања, наду не имајући, и безбожни на свету: А сад у Христу Исусу, ви који сте некада били далеко, близу постадосте крвљу Христовом. Јер је Он мир наш, који обоје састави у једно, и развали плот који је растављао, непријатељство, телом својим, Закон заповести наукама укинувши; да из обога начини собом једног новог човека, чинећи мир; И да помири с Богом обоје у једном телу крстом, убивши непријатељство на њему. И дошавши проповеди у јеванђељу мир вама далекима и онима који су близу. Јер Он доведе к Оцу обоје у једном духу. Тако дакле више нисте туђи и дошљаци, него живите са светима и домаћи сте Богу, Назидани на темељу апостола и пророка, где је камен од угла сам Исус Христос, На коме сва грађевина састављена расте за цркву свету у Господу; На коме ћете се и ви сазидати за стан Божји у духу.

ЧИТАЊЕ СВЕТОГ ЈЕВАНЂЕЉА ПО ЛУКИ (8, 41-56)

У време оно дође човек по имену Јаир, који беше старешина у зборници, и паде пред ноге Исусове, и мољаше Га да уђе у кућу његову; Јер у њега беше јединица кћи од дванаест година, и она умираше. А кад иђаше Исус, туркаше Га народ. И беше једна болесна жена од течења крви дванаест година, која је све своје имање потрошила на лекаре и ниједан је није могао излечити, И приступивши састраг дотаче се скута од хаљине Његове, и одмах стаде течење крви њене. И рече Исус: Ко је то што се дотаче мене? А кад се сви одговараху, рече Петар и који беху с њим: Учитељу! Народ Те опколио и турка Те, а Ти кажеш: Ко је то што се дотаче мене? А Исус рече: Неко се дотаче мене; јер ја осетих силу која изиђе из мене. А кад виде жена да се није сакрила, приступи дрхћући, и паде пред Њим, и каза Му пред свим народом зашто Га се дотаче и како одмах оздрави. А Он јој рече: Не бој се, кћери! Вера твоја поможе ти; иди с миром. Док Он још говораше, дође неко од куће старешине зборничког говорећи му: Умре кћи твоја, не труди учитеља. А кад чу Исус, одговори му говорећи: Не бој се, само веруј, и оживеће. А кад дође у кућу, не даде ниједноме ући осим Петра и Јована и Јакова, и девојчиног оца и матере. А сви плакаху и јаукаху за њом; а Он рече: Не плачите, није умрла него спава. И подсмеваху Му се знајући да је умрла. А Он изагнавши све узе је за руку, и зовну говорећи: Девојко! Устани! И поврати се дух њен, и устаде одмах; и заповеди да јој дају нека једе. И дивише се родитељи њени. А Он им заповеди да никоме не казују шта је било.

Ваведење Пресвете Богородице. Када се Пресветој Деви Марији навршише три године од рођења, доведоше је родитељи њени свети, Јоаким и Ана, из Назарета у Јерусалим, да је предаду Богу на службу према ранијем обећању своме. Три дана пута има од Назарета до Јерусалима; но идући на богоугодно дело тај пут не беше им тежак. Сабраше се и многи сродници Јоакимови и Анини, да узму учешћа у овој светковини, у којој узимаху учешћа невидљиво и ангели Божји. Напред иђаху девице са запаљеним свећама у рукама, па онда Пресвета Дева, вођена с једне стране оцем својим а с друге мајком. Беше Дева украшена царским благољепним одећама и украсима, како и приличи кћери царевој, невести Божјој. За њима последоваше множина сродника и пријатеља, сви са запаљеним свећама. Пред храмом беше 15 степена. Родитељи дигоше Деву на први степен, а она онда сама брзо узиђе до врха, где је срете првосвештеник Захарија, отац св. Јована Претече, и узевши је за руку уведе је не само у храм него у Святая святыхъ у Светињу над Светињама, у коју нико никада не улажаше осим архијереја, и то једанпут годишње. Св. Теофилакт Охридски вели, да је Захарија „ван себе био и Богом обузет” када је Деву уводио у најсветије место храма, иза друге завесе, иначе се не би могао овај поступак његов објаснити. Тада родитељи принесоше жртву Богу, према закону, примише благослов од свештеника, и вратише се дома, а Пресвета Дева оста при храму. И пребиваше она при храму пуних 9 година. Док јој беху родитељи живи посећиваху је често, а нарочито блажена Ана. Када пак родитељи њени беху Богом одазвани из овога света, Пресвета Дева оста као сироче, и не жељаше никако до смрти удаљавати се из храма нити ступати у брак. Како то беше противно и закону и обичају у Израиљу, то она по навршетку 12 година би дата св. Јосифу, сроднику своме у Назарет, да под видом обручнице живи у девствености, те тако и да своју жељу испуни и привидно закон задовољи. Јер у то време не знаде се у Израиљу за девојке завештане на девство до краја живота. Пресвета Дева Марија беше прва таква доживотно завештана девојка, и њој после следоваху у цркви Христовој хиљаде и хиљаде девственица и девственика.
